A transgender youth who said he was bullied and harassed at school and in the military because of his gender identity is now suing the administration for failing to protect him.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, alleges that President Donald Trump’s transgender policies will lead to “extreme harm” to transgender youths and “unintended consequences” for their lives.
“Mr. Trump’s administration’s ‘Anti-Transgender Policy’ will create a climate of extreme harm to transgender and gender nonconforming youth by allowing discrimination, harassment, physical assault, and the infliction of emotional distress upon them,” the lawsuit states.
“The Anti-TransGender Policy will create extreme harm by making transgender youth feel as though they are being singled out for discrimination, which will lead them to seek counseling, mental health services, and other services that may not be available to them in the school system.”
The lawsuit is being brought by the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National LGBTQ Task Force.
In January, the White House announced the implementation of a new “Policy of Support for LGBT Youth,” a document that seeks to protect transgender youth from bullying, harassment and violence.
“The Trump Administration has repeatedly failed to protect the safety and well-being of transgender youth,” said Rachel Baskin, a lawyer for the transgender youth and co-founder of the Center for Constitutional Rights, in a statement at the time.
“Now, in the face of the administration’s policies, the Trump administration is again forcing transgender youth to hide their true gender identity in order to avoid being targeted with discrimination, violence, and harassment.”
The new policy comes amid a wave of reports of hate crimes against transgender people and their allies across the country, including violence at a transgender high school in California and the murder of a transgender woman in Alabama.
“As transgender and intersex individuals, we are often marginalized by society at large and by our own government,” Baskins told Breitbart News in a phone interview on Friday.
“When we are the victims of hate crime and we are targeted, we’re often the targets of retaliation and violence.”
“We feel we’re being silenced by the administration,” she added.
“I’m hopeful this lawsuit will help to bring about some change.”
